Hello, my name is Shannon Hickman, LCSW, CST and I am an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 14  years of experience in a variety of disciplines. When I began my career, I worked in various group and individual settings, including hospitals, clinics, and drug and alcohol treatment facilities. Over the years, however, my path and passion has led me to open a private practice. My varied experiences encouraged me to hone in on my goals and my mission as a social worker. Now, I am committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment focused on individual and couples counseling as well as sex therapy.  Furthermore, the breadth of my expertise which stems from my previous experience now allows me to help my clients with extremely diverse concerns.

I believe that it is a culmination of the experiences in my life which led me to pursue a career in social work and ultimately allowed me to specialize in the area which I am most passionate about which is individual and couples counseling and sex therapy. From the time I was a small child, I have always been driven to help others. One of the first jobs I chose directly out of high school involved working with elderly adults at an assisted living facility. This opened my eyes to a world of need and encouraged me to attain a college degree in an area that would allow me to help those around me.

In 2004, I received my undergraduate degree in social work from the University of Utah and went on to receive my masters degree in social work in 2006 from Rutger’s University. I have always enjoyed traveling and have lived in Hawaii, China and New Jersey. Traveling to other countries has shown me the beauty and the struggles that people all over the world face and I believe has made me a more understanding therapist. Since graduating from college and beginning my career I have worked with patients in the medical field in various capacities and in various medical settings, including hospitals and clinics. Sex and sexuality has always been a part of this journey and frequently a topic of concern and difficulty for many patients. I enjoy creating a safe space, free of judgment for individuals to be able to begin to discuss topics surrounding sexuality which some had never spoken about before. Often times I found that I was the first person who held a safe place where patients could open up about their sexuality. This led to an increased desire to help clients with sexuality and to contribute as a whole to a sexually healthier society. I derive great joy and satisfaction from helping individuals and couples discover the bliss that goes along with sex, intimacy, connection, relationships and much more.

In my private practice role as a therapist, I provide general therapy to individuals and couples, I am also able to provide specific treatment for concerns related to sexual intimacy through sex therapy. I specialize in couples counseling and sex therapy. I enjoy helping couples regain confidence in their relationship and rebuild the connection that so often gets lost with the demands and pressures of daily life.
